Methodology

How every number on this site is sourced, calculated, and kept current.

Where the numbers come from

Every cost, rate, and threshold used in a calculator on this site traces back to a named source: an insurer, a state department of insurance, a federal agency (CMS, the Federal Register), or an industry association like the Insurance Information Institute or NAIC.

That source is recorded as a comment directly next to the figure in the site's data file, along with the date it was last verified against the source.

If a figure cannot be traced to a source we can point to, we do not invent one. Where the industry commonly repeats a statistic that has no verifiable origin, we leave it out of the calculation entirely rather than presenting a guess as fact.

Where a real figure exists but only as an estimate, a range, or a single documented example (rather than a comprehensive dataset), the calculator says so explicitly, either in the assumptions list under the result or in the "How this is calculated" panel.

Why results show a range, not just one number

Real insurance quotes vary by insurer, underwriting criteria, and individual circumstances that a calculator cannot see. A single number presented with no caveat implies a precision the underlying data does not actually have.

Where the source material supports it, results show a range alongside the headline estimate, and the assumptions list states plainly what the calculation does and does not account for.

How rates and rules are kept current

Every figure carries a recheck date. Figures tied to law or regulation, such as state minimum liability requirements or Medicare premiums, are rechecked on a shorter cycle than stable industry averages, since those can change with a single legislative session or an annual federal rate notice. Each tool page shows the date its underlying data was last verified.

Review process

Content is reviewed by James Anderson, Licensed Insurance Agent (Life & Health, Michigan). For property and casualty tools that fall outside that license's specific scope (auto, home, business liability), the review focuses on sourcing accuracy and calculation methodology rather than acting as a substitute for licensed advice in that line.

What this site is not

Nothing on this site is an insurance quote, a policy offer, or personalized financial advice. Every calculator produces an estimate for planning and comparison purposes. Actual premiums and eligibility are set by insurers and regulators based on information a calculator does not have access to. Get an actual quote from a licensed insurer or agent before making a coverage decision.
